On Tuesday, April 1st, 2008, the Malone Family lost their father, Tom Malone. He was 92 years of age upon his passing. Everyone in the Irish communities in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare and in the Philadelphia area in the U.S. extend their deepest sympathy to the Malone Family. Tom was a great presence in Miltown and will be sorely missed. | Tom Malone's Pub & Markethouse is owned by Sean and Fintan Malone, sons of Tom Malone. The building has been tastefully renovated, blending the old with the new, including local building materials such as the slate floor and the stone arches throughout the pub. The building has a timeless air about it and reflects much thought and respect for the surrounding environment of West Clare. Sessions, ceilidhs, film screenings are as comfortably accomodated here as would be a quiet pint by the stove.

The upstairs of the Market House has been transformed into a lovely full-service restaurant, complete with a balcony seating area with windows overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This raised area will remind you of the theatre balcony of years gone by. For many years in the 1950's and 1960's movies were shown in what was then known as the Central Hall. |

A Brief History of the Market House
|
| The history of the Market House is a fascinating view of life in a small Irish town. Built in the early 1800's, the Market House served the local community when the farmers would bring their produce to town with the cart and pony. |
The cart and pony would then be placed on the scales to determine the weight of the produce being sold. This scale now hangs on the rear wall of the pub. |
When the Market House was bought by Tom Malone in the early 1960's, it became known as Central Hall. "The Hall was West Clare's answer to Carnegie Hall" - Tom Munnelly, Historian & Folklorist. Small in size but large in talent, the Hall hosted the last of the traveling shows which brought song, dance and drama to small towns. Maggie Barry (the singing tinker), legendary fiddler Michael Gorman and the great sean nos singer Seosamh O 'hEanai (Joe Heaney) gave memorable performances in Central Hall. The Hall also served as a cinema showing films from the U.S. and beyond. |
